Environmentally sustainable and financially viable support to customers
Wärtsilä is a global leader in innovative technologies and services shaping the decarbonisation of marine and energy. With approximately 6.5 billion euros in sales and 18,300 employees across 77 countries, the Wärtsilä strategy focuses on helping customers to continuously improve their environmental and economic performance. Wärtsilä is listed on Nasdaq Helsinki.
Ensuring the solid foundation for continuous business success
Project Management is an important competence area in Wärtsilä and the Project Management learning portfolio plays a central role in ensuring people working within the field of Project Management have the right competences to perform their work effectively. It is crucial to keep the learning portfolio up to date and to develop it regularly to prepare for future needs.
Due to this Wärtsilä identified a need to conduct a review of the existing learning portfolio to ensure that it reflects current practices and supports both the present and future competence needs of the organisation. Wärtsilä decided to involve the CEO of Talent Network, Jori Kosonen, to provide external perspectives and expertise to the review, to look at the learning portfolio with fresh eyes and challenge their thinking.
Concrete benefits and results
The review has resulted in a fully updated PM learning portfolio, the portfolio is relevant, current, and aligned with the competencies that PM professionals need across different roles. In addition, one important outcome is the establishment of structured learning paths for people working within PM, based on seniority levels. The portfolio now offers a well-balanced mix of courses and programmes, supporting both early‑career professionals and those in more advanced roles.

External expertise as fuel for improvement
“We wanted someone who could look at our PM learning portfolio with fresh eyes and question our assumptions where needed”, says Nina Karhu (Learning Portfolio Management Expert). “Jori Kosonen’s expertise and experience was a big support to us. He was able to connect his external knowledge into Wärtsilä business environment as well as link competence areas to appropriate framework. Working with Jori provided a valuable learning opportunity on a global scale.”
